Happy Chinese New Year to everyone! It has been an exciting past year for PAAPP. 2009 promises another better year.

A few key events lined up for 2009-

1. Introduction of new classes- Veteran class and JWW class. Veteran class is for dogs above 7 years old competing at Novice level with reduced run rate. JWW (Jumps with weaves) is a class at Novice level difficulty and without the table, dog walk, see-saw or A-frame. SCT is typically 40-50 secs. (Rules at revision J is being revised now and will be published by March 2009. Current Revision I Rules is available here)

2. Introduction of 2 new titles- V.A.D (Veteran Agility Dog) and J.D.Ex (Jumping Dog Excellent) after getting 4 clean runs in each of the 2 classes.

3. Introduction of Agility Games with titling provision. The title is A.G.SP (Agility Games Specialist). There are 8 Games, so play hard to get a placing in all 8 Games ( minimum 20 points) and the title goes to the Dog! (Agility Games Rules Rev B is available here.)

4. Introduction of Handlers Cup- to be awarded in December 2010. Read more of this here.

5. By December 2009, we hope to award at least 5 Silver Medals and 5 Gold medals to consistent and deserving dogs. Read more of the Silver and Gold medals here.

Aim for 100 Clean Runs in 2009-

For January 2007 to December 2008 we have had 24 Agility Trials, 536 entries with 90 Clean Runs and 11 Gamblers Qualifying Certificates being awarded. For 2009, we have planned for 15 Agility Trials and 4 Agility Games. We expect about 400 entries and 100 Clean Runs in 2009.

In the Obedience Sport, we have had 6 Obedience Trials, 83 entries with 54 Qualifying Certificates being awarded. The first PAA's Malaysian Obedience Champion (M.OB.CH) goes to Max Lee's Toy Poodle- Huatchyeken Whizzle, M.OB.CH. Congratulations. We hope at least 5 dogs to obtain the M.OB.CH title by December 2009.

For Flyball sport, the Game has not generated much interest for Malaysians. Only a handful of dogs can perform and it is not enough to form teams for competitive Flyball.

The Dog Agility Sport in Malaysia

The Dog Agility Sport in Malaysia has certainly moved a level up for the past 2 years. With agility competitions in Penang and Kuala Lumpur, lets hope other interested parties in Ipoh, Melaka and Johor will have the desire and passion to promote this sport by organizing trials more frequently.

A checklist for aspiring agility groups for a successful and lasting agility organization-

1. A passionate leader with a 'never-giving-up' spirit.

2. A team of passionate and hard-working individuals who want to learn and enjoy the Agility Game- from running their own dog to organizing Agility trials.

3. Equipment- cost about RM15K-RM25K for complete set for Novice level agility. Storage of equipment is another headache.

4. Finding sponsorships for agility trials can be nerve-wrecking.

5. Finding good venues can be challenging.

6. Upgrade local Agility judges to international level to reduce costs of foreign judges.

Happy Trialing in 2009.
