10.1 HEEL WORK
Exercise
Handler and dog teamwork without the use of leash is the most desirable
point of this exercise. There are 2 parts of the heel work. The first
part is Heel Free, followed by Heel in Motion.
The heel free consist of slow pace, normal pace and fast pace. The dog’s
pace of slow pace, normal and fast pace must be evident.
For the Heel in Motion, the dog will be required to perform the sit,
stand and down whilst in motion.
Handler is only allowed to use 1 command, by voice or signal. Any
unusual or additional act, signal or command which gives the dog
assistance shall be penalised.
Steward’s orders: Forward, Right turn, Left turn, About turn, Left about
turn, Fast pace, Slow pace, Normal pace, Stand your dog, Heel your dog,
Down your dog, Sit your dog, Position coming up, Now, Halt, Figure 8,
Lead out, Exercise finished. Orders may be given in any sequence and
repeated. Left about turn means that the handler and the dog turn left.
At
some time during the test, the dog shall be required, whilst walking at
heel at normal pace, to be left at the stand, sit and down positions.
Caller steward will alert handler that a position in motion is coming
up. Handler will look directly in front and see the steward holding a
board with the position required ie. stand, sit or down. Caller steward
will then say ‘Now' and handler will give the required command to the
dog. Handler shall continue forward alone without hesitation, and
continue as directed by judge until reaching the dog when both shall
continue walking forward together. Heel work may also include left about
turns and figure of 8 at normal and/ or slow pace.
Scoring
Dog
will be scored zero if it is unmanageable
or
misses all three of the positions
during the heel in motion.
Substantial deduction for each missed position during the heel in
motion.
Substantial deduction for extra commands, for dogs that continuously
break away from the handler, heeling wide, crowding, forging, or failure
to change pace accordingly.
Minor deduction for poor sits, stands and imperfections in the heeling.
10.2. DISTANCE CONTROL
Exercise
Dog
is to work in response to handler's commands given at a distance-either
voice or signals BUT not both.
Steward’s orders: Forward, About turn, Stand your dog, Leave your dog,
About turn, Halt, Sit your dog, Stand your dog, Down your dog, Return to
your dog, Exercise finished.
Heeling is done in the same manner as Heel Free. This can be done by
voice or signal by the handler.
The handler will be asked by the steward if he wishes to use voice or
signals
On order by steward, handler will move forward until told to about turn
and stand the dog. On further order, handler will command dog to stay
and will move forward at least 5-6 metres, about turn and face the dog..
On separate orders of steward or by the use of the sign boards the
handler will give signal or voice command to the dog to sit, stand and
down the dog. The Handler to return to dog upon the steward’s command.
Scoring
Dog
will be scored zero if unmanageable, or fails on a single command to
stand, sit, down, or anticipates commands.

to
heel or stay or failure to respond during heeling routine,
prolonged signals, slow response to signals and for inattention. Minor
deductions for heeling imperfections.
10.3. SEND AWAY

on command, is to be sent away,
in as
straight a line as possible
to a designated distance and placed in a down position, and to remain in
the Down position until commanded to heel. Distance for send away shall
be a maximum of 10-12 metres (indoor) and a maximum of 15 metres
(outdoors).
Voice
and simultaneous signal are permitted but as soon as the dog leaves
handler, the hand must return to normal position.
Judge's orders: Forward, Stand your dog.
Are
you ready?
Send your dog, Forward, About turn, Heel your dog, Halt, exercise
finish.
When
handler says “YES, I am ready”, the handler must stand straight beside
the dog and wait for the steward’s “Send your dog”. Upon the steward
saying “ Send your dog”, the handler may hold the dog’s head or place
hand beside the dog’s face to send the dog.
The dog is to be sent away from the handler. When dog has reached the
designated distance or that the handler cannot improve the position of
the dog by any further commands, dog should be commanded to down.
After dog is in down position, handler will be ordered to go forward.
Handler will then walk towards the dog and at a halfway point, handler
will be ordered to about turn. At judge's order to ‘Heel your dog', dog
shall be commanded to heel to the left of the handler and continue
walking until ordered to halt.
Scoring
Dog
will be scored zero if it does not perform on first command or go the
required distance, or does not drop on the first command.
Substantial deduction for dog that does not go in a straight line,
slowness and hesitation in going out, anticipation of the down and
subsequent heeling positions. Minor deduction for other imperfections.
10.4. RETRIEVE OVER HIGH JUMP

Steward's orders:
Take
up your position, Are you ready?
Throw your dumbbell, Send your dog, Take it, Finish, Exercise finished.
Steward will order handler to take up position in front of hurdle with
dog sitting at heel. On order by Steward to throw the dumbbell, handler
may give a command to stay and must then throw the dumbbell over the
hurdle about 4-5 metres away. The judge may re-order the throwing of the
dumbbell if the dumbbell does not go over the jump or not thrown at
least 4 metres away, or thrown too far and obstructing the retrieve by
the dog. On order from Steward to ‘Send your dog', handler may give the
command to retrieve. Retrieve must be executed at a fast pace and dog
must clear jump in both directions.
On
its return, dog must sit directly in front of handler and hold dumbbell
until Steward orders ‘Take it', after which handler may execute the give
command. Dog must remain in sitting position until Steward orders
‘Finish' and on the handler's command, dog must go to the heel position
and sit straight.
Scoring
Dog
will be scored zero if it does not retrieve dumbbell on first command or
anticipates the command to retrieve, or refuses to release the dumbbell
to the handler, where the dumbbell is dropped and not delivered to hand.
Over
50% if dog only jumps one side of the jump either going from handler or
returning to handler.
Substantial deductions for slowness, excessive mouthing of dumbbell,
failure to sit in front or finish, or anticipation of finish. Minor
deductions for poor sits, finishes and minor mouthing of dumbbell,
playing with dumbbell , where the dumbbell is dropped and immediately
picked up without additional command, or a re-throw of the dumbbell due

Steward's orders: Take up your position,
Are
you ready?
Leave your dog, Send your dog, Finish, Exercise finished.
The
steward will order handler to take up position in front of broad jump
with dog sitting at heel. On order by judge, handler may give a command
to stay and will go to a position facing the right hand side of the jump
and stand at least ½ metre from the jump.
On
order from Steward to ‘Send your dog', handler may say the dog's name
and give command to jump
by
verbal or hand signal but not both. The handler must turn right whilst
dog is in mid air over the jump.

will be scored zero if it refuses to jump on the first command, or does
not jump the entire width of the jump, walks over any part of the broad
jump, does not return to handler or anticipates jump command, or use of
double command (hand and voice simultaneously).
Substantial deduction for clipping the jump, slowness, failure to sit in
front or finish, or anticipation of finish. Minor deduction for failure
to return smartly to handler, poor sits or finishes, failure to leave a
distinct pause between the dog’s name and the command.

about turn and face the dog. Judge will circle each dog at approximately
1 metre away and all dogs must stay standing until judge has circled all
dogs. Judge will then say ‘Return to your dog' and handler will walk
around behind dog to the heel position. Dog must remain in standing
position until the judge has ordered ‘Exercise finished'.
Scoring
Dog
will be scored zero if there is any snapping, growling, shyness, fear,
anger, or resentment shown at any time or the dog moves all 4 paws or
the dog does not perform the principle feature of the exercise.
