Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Matthews leads host of new fights added to UFC 253
Several new fights were confirmed for UFC 253 on Sept. 26 including the return of Diego Sanchez as he takes on Australian welterweight Jake Matthews.
The fights were announced by the UFC on Tuesday.
Sanchez will make his return to action after earning a disqualification win over Michel Pereira in his most recent fight following an illegal knee strike that ended the contest.
Overall, the former Ultimate Fighter season 1 winner is 3-1 in his past four fights including additional wins over Mickey Gall and Craig White.
As for Matthews, he’s picked up two wins in a row over Emil Meek and Rostem Akman while moving to 5-1 overall in his past six appearances in the octagon.
New Zealand featherweight Shane Young will also appear at UFC 253 when he faces the always exciting Nate Landwehr, who is coming of his first win in the promotion following a bloody war with Darren Elkins back in May.
Lightweight prospect Brad Riddell makes his return to action off five straight wins including back-to-back victories in the UFC when he clashes with Alex Da Silva.
Da Silva is coming off his first win in the UFC after earning a unanimous decision against Rodrigo Vargas last August.
The upcoming UFC 253 card will be headlined by a middleweight title fight where reigning champion Israel Adesanya takes on Brazilian powerhouse Paulo Costa in a highly anticipated and volatile showdown on Sept. 26. While the promotion hasn’t confirmed the location for the event, it’s likely UFC 253 will take place on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
